Departure from Batchewana Bay: 9:00 a.m.
Breakfast at the Saltzburg Hof was delicious; people stopping in from the US side of the border for a leisurely Saturday morning meal looking over Lake Superior. What a vie
-! warnings that bridge at Nipigon has been completely closed with a 9 hour detour through Hornpayne.
Wawa for a quick snack lunch at the tourist info centre. Check to see that the Nipigon Jackfish River Bridge was open; just opened yesterday. Whew!
Arrived in Marathon: 2:00 p.m.;
People:
- met the volunteer fire chief, John, who connected us with our friend, Detachment Commander Chris Wayley.
- chatted with Chris and heard about life in Marathon
- on our way to Thunder Bay: warnings that bridges may be closed or under repair with slow traffic.
!
Arrived in Thunder Bay in time for a good long walk down Oliver to Memorial to Centre street ( I think) to
Golf LInks Road, where we saw a deer. What a surprise - to see a deer right in the city.
Wildlife:
- saw a little chipmunk in the middle of hwy 17 Trans-Canada Hiway, that was standing in the roadway while a huge transport truck drove right by him without the chipmunk getting hit. By the time we saw him, we also drove right by him without hitting him!
Harry said, "that was crazy. We've got to see some more wildlife, and maybe something bigger."
- next we saw a groundhog trying to cross hwy 17. He dodged us, but we didn't see where he went next.
- then, we saw a young female moose right in the ditch near Marathon
- then a young black bear climbing the steep roadside closer to Terrace Bay
- finally the deer right in Thunder Bay.
